"Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time" is based on the idea that our behaviors are partly governed by our capacity to interpret long and short term probabilities from our physical environment. We are all consciously and unconsciously trying to avoid undesirable outcomes. This work models those processes.
"Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time" preserves and privileges two central interests inForsythe's oeuvre: counterpoint and the unconscious choreographic competence inducedby choreographic situations. Suspended from automated grids, more than 400 pendulumsare activated to initiate a sweeping 15 part counterpoint of tempi, spacial juxtapositionand gradients of centrifugal force which offers the spectator a constantly morphinglabyrinth of significant complexity. The spectators are free to attempt a navigation thisstatistically unpredictable environment, but are requested to avoid coming in contact withany of the swinging pendulums. This task, which automatically initiates and alerts thespectators innate predictive faculties, produces a lively choreography of manifold and intricateavoidance strategies.
